Critical illness cover (CIC) is a long-term insurance policy designed to pay a lump sum on the diagnosis of certain life-threatening or debilitating, but not necessarily fatal, conditions. These include a heart attack, stroke, cancer, multiple sclerosis, loss of limbs and others
The specific illnesses covered will be detailed within the policy wording and can these differ between insurers. CIC policies usually only pay out once, and therefore we do not recommend them as a replacement for income.
We will always look to attach Total and Permanent disability benefit (TPD) to your policy, on an own occupation basis. This means that because of a sickness or injury you are unable to work in dentistry. We believe this option is extremely important for dentist’s as it means the policy will pay a claim if you have lost the physical or mental ability through an illness or injury to practice dentistry.
All dental surgeons, in our opinion, should take specialist advice before taking out critical illness policies to ensure the correct type of policy and the correct level of cover is selected.
